you could try aomei's partition assistant, it has an option to migrate os to ssd. I tried it yesterday and it works. not sure though if my msata ssd is operating at full performance or not.

You got a y580 with an OEM copy of Windows 8 correct? As in it came with Windows 8 preinstalled on your y580?

That may be tough unless you can get the factory discs to factory restore on your SSD.

My cousin and I bought two y580s from the local J&R and they both came with OEM copies of Windows 8. The general consensus from the massive Y580 Owners thread was that installing and plugging a new OS on an msata would be relatively easy provided you had the OS install discs. We both have Windows Pro upgrade keys from the $15 promotion which we were going to use to clean install W8 on our laptops. Unfortunately, since the OEM serial is applied directly from the bios, it cancels out the option for upgrading as it forces the W8 OEM license during installation. You'll constantly run into an image error which will prompt you back to the start of the installation.

As such, it seems the only way to install your OS on a new msata for preinstalled Win8 Y580's is to use the factory discs or opt for what sensei22 did and transfer your OS directly to your msata. If you want the factory discs(not sure if the recovery program can make them)you can call Lenovo to send you a free copy if you bought directly from them with the full warranty. If you don't have the full warranty be prepared to pay $60(their "one time" support fee) or $150(their annual warranty fee) for them to send you the discs as according to them its not covered under the free 1 year warranty. There are also OEM copies of Windows 8 on sale on Amazon, but I'm not sure if they'd work with the bios auto-plugging the factory license as it currently does. Optionally, you can also opt to downgrade to Windows 7 if you have an old license and OS disc to use.

As for us, we opted for the time being to keep our factory state laptops with the hybrid SSD until better options become available as ordering the recovery discs from Lenovo is too expensive and we enjoy Windows 8 too much to downgrade to 7. A good solution would be figuring out how to disable the bios from applying the OEM license during the OS installation but as of yet I haven't figured out how to do it on the y580.
