I tried to fix the freezing problem with my T42 by heating the motherboard with a heat gun. I saw a youtube video about this. I put everything back together and now it will not power on. When I push the power button nothing happens. When I have it plugged in the wall the battery light comes on but it won't turn on. Anybody else tried this? I think I am hosed.

I'm no expert but, I believe the formula is:

    Heat+ Silicon = Brick

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think your SOL

Well I think I am SOL too, but I didn't really have anything to lose since it would only work for a few minutes before locking up.

Fair enough. At least it was an old machine and you used it to its full potential up until the day it died. Guess it was time for a new one anyways huh?

There's someone in the Marketplace forum on ThinkPads.com who preforms the service. I think it's $150. They send you a box and everything.

I found a replacement T41 MB which was tested and guaranteed not DOA on Ebay for less than $200.00 to rebuild my service laptop. [Which was stolen shortly after the rebuild.]
Do not attempt repair service on your cooked one.

If you were careful in your disassembly/reassembly, and are sure which length of screw goes into each hole--it is probably worth your while to find reputable ebay stores and check their auctions for a tested MB. Remember to find a copy of the IBM Hardware Maintenance Diskette and a usb floppy drive to change the Model Type and S/N of the MB to that of the base. It is just the right thing to do.

Then again, I was able to get the T60 [which is currently lost by Lenovo] with a residual warranty until June--for 369.00 from a reputable-long-time eBay reseller. Once I get the replacement (or the return of my repaired and intact laptop,) I have the choice of getting a Square Deal or Lenovo warranty--or none at all.

There is little risk in getting an off-lease laptop from a reputable reseller so long as there is some residual on the original factory warranty--just pay very careful attention to the description of the product and what comes with it.
