I'm planning on taking the plunge on a T61 through my school. I've been looking at various configurations and adding them to my shopping cart. I then try to apply the USXJULY4 discount and it tells me that it is not valid. The details about the discount here at NBR say that it works in addition to the student discount on any T61.

    Lenovo ThinkPad T61 6465 (Core 2 Duo 1.8GHz, 1GB RAM, 120GB HDD, Vista Business)
Use code USXJULY4 to save 8% off this product Use coupon code USXJULY4 to get 8% off any ThinkPad at Lenovo.com when buying via the student store (many alumni are eligible along with school staff members). Simply visit the homepage, then click on "Education" under the Solutions area, and proceed to choose your location and school from there. Lenovo will then apply a 6-12% student discount and use coupon code USXJULY4 for the further 8% off.

I even tried to spec a 6465 T61 and it still didn't work.

    Any suggestions?

Did you go through the Education portal on the homepage?

Yep, I went through the education portal two ways: through the Lenovo front page and my university computer store.

The code expired on the 8th, so that deal is over.

I see that it is now gone from the laptop deals page. However, I still find it odd that the discount wouldn't work yesterday.

When I go in through the Education portal it says July 9th on the right side of the page. Since today is the 8th, it should be good. I applied it to a cart and it shows up as a discount. Now if I go through my school's campus bookstore portal it won't work, maybe since that goes through directlenovo.com instead of shoplenovo.i2.com.

Save an additional 8% off select ThinkPad notebooks using eCoupon code USXJULY4 at checkout. Offer ends July 9.

Thanks Lew. I tried it just now and it applied the discount. Not sure why I was having trouble before. Anyway, glad to see that it is still working.

Good to hear. I'm waiting until T400 details/pricing comes out before I pull the trigger and decide between a T400 and T61.

I was thinking about waiting but I can pick up a well spec'd T61 with CPP and this discount for ~$1095 right now. From what I've read I don't think the T400's will be that cheap (but they will be better spec'd).

I wonder if the T61's will drop in price when the T400's come out?

I suspect now or immediately after the T400/500 announcement will be the best bang for your buck on a T61 series machine. The danger is that they may limit your ability to configure a T61 -- what was the history on previous model changes?

I tend to hold onto a laptop for three years or so, thus my concern is more with specs/features than absolute price. The big draws of the T400 for me is the LED backlit screen and the potential to get a P8400 CPU.
