I am trying to use a plasma as an external monitor. I hooked it up using the standard S-Video connection out of the notebook, but when using S3DuoVue under Display properties --> Settings --> Advance Settings the Resolution on the TV seems to be scaled down. The only resolution that fits the Plasma is 640 x 480 standard definition, anything larger, would not fit on the screen. The Plasma's resolution is 1366 x 768.

Hi, I don't know if this will solve your problem, but according to wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S-Video, S-video doesn't support high definition, only 480i (640 X 480) resolution. I'm guessing you probably need some type of DVI connector to get the higher resolution.

I go into my plasma straight out from my laptop's VGA ext. monitor port.
I needed to run monitor signal 40 feet though, so my solution was somewhat "extreme". To carry VGA signal 40' without quality loss, I had to go into an RGBHV adapter, and then each R, G, B, H and V channel gets it's own thick shielded coax cable. 40 feet later, when it comes out of the wall behind the plasma, it goes back to VGA with another adapter and then into my plasma's PC Input. So it is literally a second monitor as far as the laptop is concerned.
I think you can do basically the same thing with a more simple VGA -> RGB adapter. -
I have had the hardest time looking for a VGA to Component cable, I have checked all the local stores, (Bestbuy, Circuit City, Fry's, Radio Shack) but to no avail. Nor do Newegg, and Tigerdirect carry it. I have only found that Buy.com, and eBay carry the cable. (The shipping more often than not, is more expensive than the cable it self ) http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=90133330&SearchEngine=Froogle&SearchTerm=90133330&Type=PE&Category=Elec&Gad=0&dcaid=17379
Knowing that standard Component Cables, and interconnects can cost hundreds of dollars, for just a meter, 5 or 6 bucks sounds strange, Can anyone tell of the quality of these cables?
Thanks in advance. -
I got my rgbhv adapter from Blue Jeans Cable, the "breakout adapter from calrad" for 25 bucks and it works great. Unfortunately that's an exception, as most of the cables they cut & cap themselves are kinda expensive.
I would try that $6 versionWorse case scenario, you loose 6 bucks.

the software on my T43 said to set the S-video to 640x480 for use. might be a limitation in S-video that stuff gets cropped otherwise

I ended up buying the VGA to Component Cable... The cable it self seems to be of very good quality: Yet no i am still unable to get any picture to the TV. I have already adjusted my video card settings, (They also have the latest Drivers). I tried both, direct from my PC to the TV; and also through the reciever, but still no luck...
Any Ideas would be greatly appreciated
Thanks,

do you have a VGA monitor you could connect to test and be sure a signal is coming out the VGA port?
-
Yes, i forgot to mention that i tested the VGA out of the notebook, by connecting it to an old CRT monitor in the basement. The picture on the CRT is fine... Still no luck with the plasma. BTW: Model number Panasonic TH-50PX60U
