Over on the Thinkpad Reddit I've come across people purchasing their Thinkpads from eBay. They mention there are a couple resellers and they are “trusted".

I'm curious, I generally don't trust anyone, let alone eBay. But the savings can be quite substantial. Hit or miss?

What generation of ThinkPad are you interested in to begin with?

Doesn't matter. I'm talking in general. Are thier trustworthy dealers on eBay for Thinkpads? If so, who are they?

Both. I've gotten some fantastic deals on eBay, but some duds too. You really don't know what you're getting until it arrives. The good news is an eBay/Paypal dispute almost always favors the buyer. The buyer would only be out the cost of return shipping.

If you're looking for a used ThinkPad, the marketplace forum on ThinkPads.com is an excellent place to buy one. The sellers there tend to be much more honest about what they're selling, which has a lot of value, particularly on a used notebook.

It sure does. People who sell brand new ThinkPads are unlikely to deal with the older ones. And vice versa.

Of course there are. With that said, without knowing what you're looking for it's impossible to recommend anyone.
