Im thinking about getting the T61p and i wanted to know if the Turbo Memory was worth it with XP and 4gb RAM?

XP can't take advantage of Turbo memory

Anyhow, XP out of the box will not benefit from Intel Turbo mem, and if one day you will to upgrade vista, there would probably be other and better solutions then Intel Turbo memory, such as this one: http://www.sandisk.com/OEM/ProductCatalog(1389)-Vaulter_Disk.aspx -
Thanks for the eboostr link nurio.
Turbo memory isn't for XP, true. Benchmarks show an insignificant benefit, and potentially drawbacks of having Turbomemory/readyboost. Turbo memory takes up a PCI-E slot I believe, and costs money...money that could be used on more RAM, or a faster CPU, or perhaps a hybrid or solid state drive in the expansion bay. Upgrade elsewhere in specification. -
yea im going to order it with 4gb Ram and the 2.6ghz processor. Is there more than one HDD bay so I can buy a SSD for it? also how much do they really run?
-
You can buy an expansion bay module for 2.5" drives. Other modules are the CD drive and a battery.
SSD is expensive and small for storage (8gb, 32gb), yet I'm told it's like running a system from a RAM disk. Plus, it's not a moving part, so it's much less vulnerable to shock damage.
On the 2.6ghz processor, are there any benchmarks on the T7800? I searched everywhere, and only found that the 7500 was not much of an upgrade from the one before it, so I'm uncertain about upgrading from the T7700. It's an extra 350$ or so for 200mhz. -
so its not internal? And yea I noticed that as well. I don't know the actually scores but a friend of mine has it and it runs super smooth. He also swapped out his HDD for a SSD
-
You can swap out the main HDD for a SSD. You can also swap out the CD drive (do you carry CDs with you?) for the HD bay (about 60$ when configuring a new T61) and add the SSD to that. I'd assume it would be bootable from there, or it could be done in the reverse with the HDD in the expansion bay.

Keep in mind, if you go with 4GB then you will need a 64bit version of the XP OS which may cause compatability problems with some drivers and software. Otherwise 32bit XP will recognize up to 3.5GB
That memory limit is for ALL memory including graphics. So a 32bit XP system with 256MB graphics and 4GB or ram will only be able to use 3GB+256MB of system memory.
I have a T61p running XP 32bit with 3GB of ram and it is more than enough to run VMware, Adobe CS3 Suite, and GIS software. In fact I am really amazed at how snappy this little laptop is. I don't even use my desktop unit anymore. -
XP be will not rconize turbo memory -
Hi, I saw your posting and would like your help. Lenovo has treated me very poorly. I bought a Laptop from their web site, a T61p, 15 inch wide screen. When I bought it the web site had an option to buy XP Laptops with Turbo Memory. I also called Lenovo and they assured me that even though Turbo Memory was for Vista, there was a patch that I could download to make it work with XP Pro.
Also, desktop screen saver and back ground programs like Webshots Desktop do not display properly on the wide screen. Wish I could get it to stretch and properly display.
I live in Japan. I got my computer, of course it did not work. I had to reformat the hard drive just to work on the thing.
There is an IBM center close to me. The machine is under warranty, but Lenovo refused to give me an RMA number, or ship the thing back to them, or to take care of me and fix the problem. I have all of the emails from management. I disputed the charges on my Master Card and had them removed. So the machine is just sitting here now.
I was fraudulently induced to buy the machine by Lenovo because I wanted a Windows XP Pro machine and Turbo Memory or Solid State hybrid HDD machine. They also violated federal warranty / guaranty laws by refusing to take care of the problem they caused.
What can you suggest? Is there someway to use this machine? Can I get it to work with or without the turbo memory and also the desktop to display properly?
Thank you,
Paul -
