What should be the right procedure in case I want to
leave for, lets say, 3 hours ?
Should I turn the computer off, ot put it in Stand-Bye ?
And in general, what is the rule ?
A link would be fine if that Q had been discussed.

    Thank U.

    For me:

During the day: Standby or hibernate (really depends on how long I'll be gone and how I'm feeling).
    At night: Shutdown

3 hours is a pretty long time....there isn't much point putting it into standby. Either hibernate or shutdown to save battery life.

For me, i'll put on standby when i'm away to take a call (say 15-30 mins). When i'm think i'm going to be away for more then an hour, i'll shutdown or hibernate (the latter is faster and more energy saving).

edit : dude, there's no right or wrong procedure in turning off your notebook. It's a matter of choice ;)

There's no rule, as such.... It depends on your liking.. Most people hibernate/shutdown, as far as I know. Standby is generally used for short periods, like, say 15 mins, 1/2 an hour.

i almost never use standby, due to power consumption, starting from hibernation only takes a few seconds longer. I will generally hibernate between classes during the day, and shutdown before i head to bed.

I'm using standby more and more.
Seeing as I will probably get way more than 24 hours of stand-by time (not sure how long it will last though, a guess) setting it for standby for an hour isn't a big deal at all. And 3 times no big deal at all still equals to no big deal ;)

The main concern for me is that the computer can wake up during a standby and if it is in the bag it could overheat. Sure the laptop do have overheating protection and will probably shut down before any damage occurs but still if I'd leave it on stand-by for more than an hour I wouldn't want to put it in a bag.

For some odd reason some notebook configuration will make it wake up, like a scheduled software scan or a hardware bringing the notebook out of standby.

If it really wakes up from standby in your bag, the CPU, hard drive, everything will generate heat. There is no cool ariflow.

I'm surprised there's not more talk on this, correct me if I'm wrong but I think it's a very important subject. I too would like some more expert advice on what to do as I believe what I was doing before I thought was good but I think ended up wearing down and hurting my previous hp high-end business notebook.

I use the computer throughout the day, usually every day, and this is what I would do everyday:
When I have the computer plugged in, I always leave it on. When I was on battery and didn't need the computer for at least 20 minutes or needed to pack it and go somewhere and use it again in 30 minutes-3 hours I would put it on stand-by. At the end of the day I would turn it off.
I don't know why, but I believe this has something to do with why my motherboard crashed within the first 1 1/2 years of an expensive high-end hp business laptop.

I am getting my t60 soon, woo! It will have xp home. Any help/advice on what I should do is really appreciated.

After one incident of wakeup from standby in my briefcase on a T20 years ago, I have avoided standby ever since. I've changed my power management schemes so that automatic standby will not happen as a function of battery charge, lid closing, or power button pressing. For me, it's hibernate or shutdown.

Hibernate is my default choice. Zero power consumption while it's snoozing. Wakes up right where you left off. Much quicker than shut down and reboot.

My laptop is my life, as a consultant who teaches classes from it, and I've never had an issue with my strategy. The only time I reboot is when a software update forces it, or in the event that I want to "clean out the cobwebs" and start fresh. Reboot probably once every 10 days on average. Hibernate every other time.

Thanks. Sounds like good advice. So you probably average rebooting every 10 days and hibernate the rest of the time...how often do you turn off computer?

Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

I almost never turn it off and leave it off. That would only happen if I wanted a fresh boot to wipe the slate clean, but also didn't want to use the laptop for a while right after the boot, and that combo is pretty unlikely. From a power consumption standpoint, hibernated IS fully turned off.

Has anyone (besides me) ever had a hard time getting out of hibernation?

I often *accidently* shut down my T60 when holding down the power button, when I am trying to get out of hibernation.

Actually, I think this is an issue I have with almost any notebook I have tried. Dell Ispiron 6000, HP Compaq nx7000, HP NW8440

I don't know how long I am *not* supposed to hold it down until it shuts down...

I try not to use stand-by too much. If I do, the system has a tendency to inexplicably lock up once in awhile after coming out of stand-by, forcing me to shut down anyway.

Also, system performance seems much degraded after several consecutive stand-by(s).

Thanks again for help. One more question, if you're at home and laptop is plugged in throughout day, but you take various 30 minutes-3 hour breaks from the computer, do you leave the computer on the whole time or hibernate when you're not using it?

For short breaks like 30 min or less, I let it fly. More than that I hibernate.

Not even once in many years and three ThinkPads. A quick press of the power button (no holding down at all) un-hibernates. Fn-F12 will do the same.

I've never used it too much but I've never had a problem with taking the computer in and out of hibernate. Usually I'd have to hold down at least 2-3 seconds for it to power down instead of return from hibernate. Don't hold down.

I have had friends who say they always use hibernate and noticed lots of problems and serious cobwebs and fixed them with a reboot but they typically don't know as much about computers and have a lot of spyware, viruses, etc too so I can't really judge hibernate on the way they use their computer.
