    Hi,

Does anyone know how much the maximum capacity of thinkpad t400 memory is? 4 GB or 8 GB?

I am planning to purchase one thinkpad t400, can anyone tell me what is the original thinkpad t400 part number which has the most powerful spec?

    Thanks in advance

The maximum supported memory is 8GB of DDR3 RAM.

That is correct. It is 8 gig max. As long as you are running Vista. Xp only sees a max of 3.25 gigs of memory.

It's nothing to do with XP versus Vista, rather, it has to do with 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems. Windows XP Professional 64-bit would see all 8GB of RAM as well, but I would not recommend that edition of Windows, since it has poor support. Windows Vista 64-bit has much better program support and handling of 32-bit applications, so I recommend that you use that in order to use >3GB of RAM.

Even Vista 32 bit will "see" all the memory, you just can't use more than 3.25GB unless its a 64 bit OS.

Nice trick they added with SP2 that added no real functionality. My S10e can "see" 2.5 GB as well, but only uses 2GB of that (chipset limitation).

If you get Vista-64 bit, do you also need to buy different versions of software? Specifically, I'm wondering if I would need to get Office programs (professional suite) in a different/specific version.

Also, if so, would their be any issues with "saving down" Excel, Word or Access files for forwarding to others not on 64-bit?

    Thanks.

The software version is what matters, the platform where you're running is indiferent from it, unless it's a pre-requesite.

Most 32-bit software works on 64bit Windows. However, security software wont.
