I've seen this mentioned elsewhere, and thought I'd fire this out as its own post to gather responses together.

My U300s (i5) has been playing up. The Synaptics trackpad freezes and the machine needs restarting to solve the problem. It just stops functioning. Arrrgh

Occasionally I have also had keyboard freeze, a few times during a repair boot up the keyboard won't let me choose an option.

These issues all started a week or so ago.

    Hardware problem? Software?

Does anyone else have this problem? I am considering getting in contact with Lenovo about a replacement unit. Very, very disappointed indeed.

I too have been having the exact same problems happening (currently my trackpad won't work, but the keyboard does). It happens probably once every few days and is very annoying. I am note sure the root of the problem but I just wanted to let you know you are not alone. I have an i7 with synaptics

I don't think I've ever had this issue. I also have the synaptics touchpad.

I got one of the first U300s' out of the gate in early November and have not updated my drivers - if there are no problems, I'm not going to tempt fate.

Here's my driver version # if that helps: 15.3.18.1 from 8/2/11.

I also have Lenovo Touchzone running all the time. I have no idea what it is/does but whenever I go to task manager it's up there. Not sure it's just that ridiculous 4 finger swipe waste of programming or if there is something more to it but figured I would throw it out there.

    Good luck - that's a bummer!

Thanks for the reply. A member of Lenovo forum seems to think it is something to do with Trackpad ribbon.

I'm not sure, because this would suggest a permanent failure, rather than an intermittent one.

    Very annoying indeed

What process do I go through in UK to return a unit? Talk to support? It's not altogether clear on the website

Rang up UK customer support. The guy said that it could either be:

    - Software issue (he asked if I had used OneKey Recovery, which I have not)
    - Hardware issue (he said it "might be a faulty circuit board beneath the trackpad")

Repair turn around is 10 days if I send it in.

In the meantime I am going to try some old trackpad drivers. But I do think this is a hardware issue. I've found that shaking the unit sometimes brings the trackpad back from freeze. That is NOT software related

Just saw this thread... man and I'm sorry to hear about your problems. My good ol' Cypress pad has never given me problems.

I remember reading others complain of trackpad / keyboard problems while using the USB ports... I rarely use mine, so I can not attest to that.

Keep us posted on your progress and whether or not you RMA it. Good luck!

I had the same issue and tried to troubleshoot it a few different ways (reinstall drivers, flash bios, etc). Talked to a support rep and they said it had to be a hardware issue (faulty trackpad) and they had seen this in a number of cases. Had me pack it up and ship it in.

dko09, is your model a synaptics by any chance?

I believe it must be a hardware issue, something to do with the build of the trackpad. Sometimes by pressing down on the body of the unit around the trackpad it can be brought back to life. But this works both ways. Pressing the machine or holding it in a certain way causes the trackpad to fail.

I am currently using the machine and everything seems ok, but if it fails again, I will definitely be sending it in. Will keep you informed. If this is a build quality problem, then Lenovo may have to recall their units. Could this be the reason why Cypress trackpads were introduced into the line?

Just failed again. Tilting the machine backwards turns the trackpad back on. BAD

My U300s was picked up for repair (replacement?) today. I did a OneKeyRecovery reset and the problem remained. Will let you know how it goes!

To update... Lenovo have had my laptop for 10/11 days now, even though promised a 10 day turn around. I rang up on day 7 and they said that the machine had only JUST arrived at the repair centre.

    Having no laptop is rubbish

    Super-massive crappy update.

The turn-around on my repair was two weeks. if I include the two days prior to that I had to wait for my address label to arrive, then it's 16 days.

the Laptop arrived back, safe and sound. The repair label says this:

Diagnosis: keyboard / pointing device / touchscreen * (constantly)
    Fault detected: Misoperating (touch pad)
Further measures: Refitting / putting back in position (connector / tube #) (Touch Pad)

The report also mentioned a Winstress report, which duefully was on the desktop.

Guess what. The touch pad stopped functioning again after about 30 minutes use. This is what was happening regularly before i.e. nothing has been fixed.

I am now stuck with the option of sending my laptop back again, another 2 week round trip.

    Thanks lenovo for sweet F-all

Aw man... Rourke I am so sorry to hear about your troubles... especially after your excellent and time consuming user review telling everyone how great the U300s is!!

Maybe raise hell with Lenovo higher tier support and get a brand new swap... may be faster turnaround. ...ask for the Orange 256gb!

    Keep us posted.

Annoying indeed. I thought there was something wrong with my fingers (oily) so that's why the touchpad would prove to be unresponsive at randomm times.

But no I do indeed believe its hardware problem. Been experiencing this out of the box. So that me having 4 major problems with the U300s. How pathetic for an Ultrabook that is the most expensive in the whole of God's Earth?

I bought my U300s on the 5th April and my machines was manufactured on the 6th March 2012. It's with i5-2467m, 128GB SSD and cypress touchpad. My Cypress touchpad does not have any freezing problems at all. I was originallly REALLY annoyed by the Cypress touchpad and desperately wanted to swap for a U300s with Synaptics touchpad (until I installed a Cypress touchpad driver from Dell which totally changed the experience, yea... not from Lenovo... I'm going to e-mail Lenovo and ask for the reasons why they did not provide the latest touchpad driver for its users!) but later I realised that there are probably some manufacture problems with Synaptics' products which lead to a switch to Cypress touchpads as seen on Dell 13z, 14z, 15z, xps 13 and even U300s. If you did not realise, freezing problems are quite commonly found on Synaptics touchpads. Therefore if there is any issues with your U300s, I urge you to ask for a change to one with Cypress touchpad. I hope this information helps. Feel free to ask me any questions.

Update... My machine will arrive back tomorrow after its second fix. As you can see, this whole process has taken well over a month. I have been laptop-less for that amount of time.

I spoke on the phone with Lenovo and they assured me that if this time the machine fails, they will issue me with a 'ticket' that I can take back to my original store, with my machine, and either get an exchange or full refund.

    Let's see what happens.

    My machine arrived back today.

They replaced my trackpad and mainboard. I now have a Cypress trackpad.

This is not perfect. I did not buy a machine with a Cypress trackpad in it, neither did I expect to have a machine with a Cypress trackpad after reading quality reviews of Synaptics enabled machines and poor reviews of Cypress enabled machines.

I did not want this. I did not pay £900 for this. I have lost:

    - Momentum scrolling
    - 2 finger tap for middle mouse button

Features I used constantly on the synaptics.

I am going to stick it out for a few days (newest drivers and all that) and if I hate this trackpad I will demand a refund. Am I being unreasonable?

    Cypress Touchpad (driver)

For those U300S owners with the Cypress Touchpad looking for a newer driver.
I have tried a Dell driver - Drivers and Downloads | Dell [United States]

This driver works well for me. Two finger scrolling is now perfect. The speed for two finger scrolling can be adjusted too.
My Lenovo U300S touchpad now functions as well as the touchpad on my Macbook Pro !

One small issue: the three finger swipe left and right, which should bring up the notepad application and wallpaper changing option, does not work however.

imessage100, that was great! I have since been digging around in the registry and found a whole heap of hidden Cypress features. I thought it was worth a thread of its own, so I started one here:

    Cypress Trackpad Tweaks

    Would love your input...
