any word on UK pricing and availability? is there a student discount available in the UK?
i read somewhere else that you can typically take the U.S. price on lenovo laptops and add +3% to get the UK pound sterling price. does that take into account UK VAT and U.S. sales tax?
wondering whether i should purchase it in California and have a friend bring it over to me in London, or just buy it in the UK?

Not sure about the availability in the UK, I'd guess by September. However, there's no doubt the price will be better here in the U.S. than what you'll find in the UK, even with the high 7.25% CA sales tax they impose on any purchase. For one, we don't have VAT here so that reduces pricing quite a bit as it's responsible for about 20% of the cost of things there. Then the exchange rate just never quite works out in your favor. If your friend is willing to buy in the U.S. and carry back by all means have him do it, I'd recommend opening the laptop and saying it's already used and for work otherwise they could hit you with an import / VAT tax upon arrival back in the U.K. if the item is declared.

i'm also not seeing the standard 10% discount coupon that you get for signing up with the U.S. online site on the UK site.
also, there is supposedly a way to stack this 10% spam coupon with the barnes and noble discount so that your X1C base configuration can be had for under $1K (although the CA tax pushes it up over $1K).
so i'm guessing i'd save at least $200 purchasing the base configuration in the U.S. -
Which etailer in the UK, besides lenovo itself, would you recommend for IT/Thinkpad purchases?
Which is a good price comparison site?
Thx. -
Just ordered the base model, paid $999 (pretax) via B&N Gold and with the newsletter coupon. Shipping date is listed as 8/25 my California address.
It doesn't look like the UK Lenovo site offers you the same 10% discount when you sign up for the newsletter on the U.S. site.
I also saw that there is talk of the base X1C being priced at around £1,000, which would make it 50%+ more expensive in the UK than what I paid in the U.S. -
This would give you a ballpark figure, Configure the laptop and see what it costs in Delaware (Tax Free), then add the UK's 20% VAT on top,
I've done the legwork on the base model which costs 1,249.00 USD in the UK that would cost 1498.8 USD which is 955.14 GBP (1GBP = 1.57 USD 18/08/2012). So the base model in the UK will be around £950 - £1000. But Lenovo Europe tends to add 3 Years warranty on their high end thinkpads so prices may actually start at around £1100 but we will wait and see since it's not out in Europe yet.
I will look forward to seeing if someone can take the screen out of the X!c and put it in the T430 and actually have success with it.
