The quality of depot warranty service does vary from country to country. In the US, for example, it is not meant to be great or reliable.
I am pondering whether or not to add 'on site' to my existing 3-year depot warranty, which currently costs an extra £67.
The company that does the servicing for Thinkpads in the UK is called Teleplan and based in Colchester, according to Lenovo support. Just wondering if anyone in the UK has had experience of sending their laptops to Teleplan and whether the quality of work was okay? If not, I may buy the on-site upgrade.

Anyone from the UK out there?

I paid the extra money for the on site service so that I don't lose the use of my computer for several days. I haven't yet needed to test the quality of the service.

Don't really mind losing the computer for a few days if it means saving the money. -
I paid extra for the on-site warranty as well. It gives me a warm feeling that I don't have to send the PC off to be pulled apart. I can watch what is being done to it, and if I feel it's not been mended and reassembled properly I can say so there and then.

1. With on-site service the technician will need to show you that the problem is fixed and the computer is working. If not, you can discuss and agree the action (such as order more parts and come back tomorrow).
2. Most depot repairs are trouble-free. For example, a couple of years back I sent a Toshiba R500 for depot warranty service. It came back with the problems fixed and no new problems.
Overall, I also think that notebooks are getting more reliable and the likelihood of needing warranty service isn't as big as it used to be.

I've had nothing but good luck with them.
