I have a new T400 and am migrating files from my old laptop to the new one. I am moving about 6 gig of files now from an external USB device. It's less than 2 years old. It's a Seagate 500 gig SATA drive in an ULTRA case, probably SATA 1.

On several occassions now I'm seeing copying speeds of about 4 MB/seconds. Does this sound right? It seems kind of slow. USB 2 is supposed to be up to 480 MBts/sec or 60 MB/sec, correct?

I have the Hitachi HTS722016K9SA00 in the T400.

Update, I am watching the copying and it has gone up to 8 MB/Sec while it's copying mp3 files. Could the slow speed be related to lots of small files?

    Thanks

Depends on file sizes as well.

Lots of small files will take much longer to copy than a few large ones. USB is also host based as opposed to FireWire which has its own controller processor - although on a T400 that shouldn't be a massive problem.
