    What error does it say when you right-click the USB Mass Storage Device in Device Manager and go to Properties?

    Have you tried uninstalling the USB controller and reinstalling it? Perhaps something got corrupt.

    Actually I tried that but then I had 2 consecutive BSODs after which System Restore failed as well. So I restored everything back to factory state using the recovery media. :(
