I tried updating the embedded controller on my x41T. Unfortunately it says its going to take about 30 seconds for a restart (signaling completion) but it has been at least 20 minutes and it is stuck on the same screen. I am not really sure what to do in fear of bricking the laptop. Should I keep waiting?

Do not shut down your computer. You very well might brick it.
Sometimes updates can take a few hours even when it should not...just give it time. -
Ok, got it definetely will not. Does it by chance matter if I had a usb cd rom drive plugged in? I just unplugged the cd rom drive it case it was going to have an issue.

so....after like 5 hours its still on this screen. I guess GG for me.

OH NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just did the controller update myself for the X41t!! It also hangs!! Why does this happen?
What should I do? Did it work out for you in the end? -
well i just turned off the notebook and on again after waiting an hour or so. fortunately the notebook still works fine, but the controller update won't insta... hm, i'll live without the update

That's what I would have advised. It's hard to make a brick. I only know of one thing that will do it and that's not it.
Uhoh Embedded Controller Update...
