What the heck causing the seemingly random scattered white pixel spots that show up on an IBM laptop lcd, that go away if you tap the middle trackpoint mouse button?

I have had this come up maybe 5-6 times now, the first got me really worried that my screen had a massive flaw.

Is it just the software? If I uninstall it will the problem go away?

Yeah, it's the software. It may well go away if you uninstall the Ultranav software, but I've never tried that.

At least you can get rid of them by clicking the middle button, though; that doesn't work for me. They just go away by themselves.

A friend of mine called it a "massager." The purpose is to check the screen for dead pixels, one at a time. I don't know how often it switches or how long it lasts. He suggested calling Lenovo and asking how to uninstall the program if it bothers me. I haven't done so yet. If you do, let us know what they say.

Interesting. So you're saying that this might not be a bug?

What's interesting is I never observed this "ultranav" issue with my laptop, but I do have 4-6 dead pixels.

If I understand correctly, it's created by a program, so it should be fixable by ceasing the program that creates it (instead of running a second program). Not sure, though.

Yes, if these are indeed tiny one-pixel windows as asserted, which might be possibly caused due to the ultranav driver or the like, then these are of course directly software fixable by Lenovo (...in case they are aware of the problem).

Just did my best "upgrade" yet on this z60m. I turned off the scrolling feature of the middle trackbutton, and not only did it made the dots go away, but I finally have a middle mouse button to click for tabs :-D

Not sure what this means - that, when you click it in Firefox, it switches tabs? I like the scrolling feature, though it's not imperative.

When using a middle mouse button (or scrollwheel click) in firefox and other browsers, it can be set to open a link in a new tab, or when clicking on a tab will close it.

I prefer the middle button to be used for scrolling, because I scroll much more often than I need to use a middle button. I guess that if I ever do need a middle button, I can assign a touchpad area to it.

Hmm... I finally discovered what you folks were talking about. I thought I found yet another dead pixel, but at work, I was using a projector! So I placed my cursor over it (I found two), and the cursor turns into what looks like a scrollbar. I've had my trackpoint's scrolling disabled since I first read your solution, so why am I still seeing that?

It looks like it's the Synaptic's driver that's causing it:

    c:\program files\synaptics\syntp\SynTPEnh.exe
