I want to get a second hard drive for my Ultrabay Slim, principally to store photos, video and music (too big for primary drive). Ideally I'd get about 200 GB. I've read a few threads here discussing these, and realize I really need to be sure I get the right drive (or maybe this isn't a good choice). Some compare the noise and vibration of the second drive to the DVD drive running. The DVD drive, when running, is very loud and vibrates a lot -- not something I think anyone would want to have going on regularly on their computer.

Can anyone recommend a good hard drive that is inobtrusive for the Ultrabay Slim hard drive adapter? Among other things, I'm considering getting a lower RPM drive so that it will be quieter (recognizing that otherwise a higher RPM drive would be much better).

Ideally I'd like a hard drive that is as inobstrusive as the primary drive. If that's not possible, I may not go down this road...

Hard drive noise seems to be hit or miss. You can get two drives of the exact same model, one noisy the other not for some reason.

Is it possible to set up a RAID 0 configuration with it?

You would have to have onboard raid on the motherboard, or be able to add a raid card to consider trying that.

I'd recommend the Samsung HM320JI 320GB disk for your UltraBay. The Western Digital WD3200BEVT is also a good choice. Review the performance numbers at Toms Hardware Site. Both of these drives are 5400rpm but perform like a 7200rpm drive.

Thanks for the help so far. Is there anyone who has actually done this who can report back on level of noise/vibration from the ultrabay hard drive? As I noted, some prior posts compare it to the DVD drive when operating, which is very loud and creates a fair bit of system vibration. If that would be a constant state of affairs, I would pass on this and pursue other options. Very curious to hear from someone with specific experience. Thanks!

If you really need more space I would wait for Samsung HM500JI which is a 500GB drive that will be faster than any notebook drive currently on the market. It should be in retail stores this month or early next month. $299 MSRP
