I searched the forums and I cannot find a definite answer as to what this is. What does it do? Does it work with any wireless card or must I use it in conjunction with certain wireless technologies? Is it only for WWAN?

The UltraConnect antennas are in your laptop for WiFi, not for WWAN. The WWAN antenna is by itself located on the side by itself. At least I'm pretty sure.

No one seems to know with certainty. I've look at the product feature pages for thinkpads that have the ultraconnect antenna and it mentions that it works with compatible technologies. what?

Not on the T61. That's why the screen is offset. The WWAN antenna is placed there on the left. If you look at the service manual it'll show you an exploded image and it'll show you where the antennas go.
