Unable to decide between the Y580 and the Y500 (single 650m)…

I am looking to purchase either the Y580 or the Y500 (single 650m) but I am having a hard time choosing between the two. Both have identical specs and are the same price ($949CDN; i7, 8GB, 1TB, 1080p, BD/DVD-RW) with the exception of the graphics card.

If the Y500 supported Optimus, there would be no discussion; I would have bought the Y500 without hesitation, as I would still have the possibility of going SLI in the future.

Since it does not support Optimus even with just one NVIDIA GPU, I am leaning more towards the Y580 just because of the better battery life (if it is needed).

Was anyone else in the same boat? If so, what did you decide?

Do you really need the 5 hours of battery life or do you just think it's nice to have? And what kind of games do you play and do you have the budget to buy the second 650m?

Edit: a few weeks ago I was about to buy the y500, so I would have chosen the y500 for its superior graphics (sli) and sleeker looks. I didn't go for it because another laptop that interests me more has just been announced. I might still go for the y500 after all though.

Ideally, I would like the best of both worlds. If I decided to go with the Y500, I couldn't afford to get the second 650m right away, so, if I wanted the performance up front, the Y580 is the way to go.

Since this machine would be my primary system (as I found a buyer for my older desktop) and I would like to be more mobile, the extended battery life is a plus with th Y580...

Well, when you go for 1 gpu the y580 is better in both gaming and mobility. The y500 is a tiny bit thinner but is somewhat bigger due to it's very big bezel. The 650m sli can be very fast, but only when the game is optimized for it.

Y500 battery is fine really. I\ve managed to get around 4 hours with webbrowsing, youtube etc.
And IMO the Y500 just looks way nicer compared to the dull and boring Y580.

+1, Watched the Campaign and Bourne Legacy on the plane from Germany back to SC, ran out of juice at the very end of Bourne Legacy. If I really care about battery life, I'll just buy another battery and keep it in my backpack. But yeah, the Y500 is a really good looking laptop. It's all the subtle details that I enjoy and it continues inside with the details in the design which is why the cooling is so good in this system. Too bad they put a POS Elan touchpad in it. LOL

The new samsung series 7 chronos. A little less powerful than the 650m sli (it has an radeon hd 8870m) but a whole lot more portable. A few hundred euros more expensive too though.

Very nice laptop. 8 hours of battery life? I would hit it. Let me go to notebookcheck and check out the specs on the 8870m. :)

Just noticed that it is touch screen also. I wonder how much this is going to cost fully optioned out. Very impressed, might be passing this Y500 off to the wife in a few months! ;) Let's hope the touchpad on the Chronos isn't by Elan. LOL
