    Hello,

I've got a T500 type 2056 on which I would like to install Windows XP instread of the preinstalled Vista

So in order to install Windows XP with Service Pack 3 (CD from miscrosoft), in the bios, I set the SATA mode in compatibility so I can detect the sata disk and install XP

The thing is: once the first step of XP install is finished (ie partition created and os files copied), the system reboots asking to take off the CD, and from that point, I get just after bios screen:

    Code:
PCI System Error on Bus/Device/Function 0008h
PCI System Error on Bus/Device/Function 0100h
    A disk read error occurred
    Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart!

And I get that message whether I'm in compatibility or AHCI mode.

According to Lenovo, this error is due to the intel turbo memory card not compatible with XP

    See article http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-70838

I open the laptop in order to remove the card, but finally, the card is not present in it, so it can't be the cause of the error.

So how can I get this fixed?

I've tried to create a windows XP boot CD with the intel matrix storage AHCI drivers by following the method given here:

    http://komku.blogspot.com/2007/11/integrate-driver-into-windows.html

    with nlite.

If I'm now able to make the install of windows with the AHCI drivers, once Windows reboot at the end of the install, I get that error disk message!!

    So any tips are welcomed

    Thanks

Is the XP CD functional in any other equipment you have tried installing it on?

Yes of course! I used that CD to install XP on a Dell E4200 and it worked perfectly!

I also tested with other Cd and I get the same result on the T500

I'm experiencing the exact same problem - any solution to this one meantime?

Have you tried the XP rollback disk(s) included with the T500? I used those to install xp without a snag.

I would be interested in checking out your issue personally but I don't have a T500 laying around here, there should be a workaround to this issue. Maybe try removing the modem/bluetooth?

for some reason I dont understand, the Thinkpad seems to hate hdds built via Image restore _outside_ of the Thinkpad itself, at another computer. By leaving the blank hdd _in the Thinkpad_ and restoring the image from an external USB drive _directly_ onto the hdd, now in the Thinkpad, everything works fine.

Is anybody able to explain that to me? Its the very same image file of course.
