I installed everything that was preinstalled by IBM, except for the drivers. By uninstalling "thinkvantage" software, does this mean I can't format anymore? Since IBMs don't come with CDs (this model anyway). Or is it installed in the hard drive in a way that I can't erase?

Also, if I recover through the "thinkvantage" button on start up. Will everything come back, or did I just loose it all?

You can remove thinkvantage, though I dont know why you'd want to!

If you phone & request it within the first 3 weeks of delivery, they will send you a set of recovery disks for free.

Too late for that. All I want from my x60s is IE and msn messenger. Boot time is very important. Ergo, I will uninstall anything and everything that is not required. My question is; if I decide to recover factory settings will I be able to do so, after uninstalling all the thinkvantage software?

SkiBunny, I'm considering adding another 1GB stick to my x60s. Does it make a big difference, when it comes to boot speed and running light software?

My X60 came standard with 1-gig RAM... adding the extra gig didn't make much difference to booting up. Stripping the applications, as you have done, will noticeably improve your boot up. So would a 7200 rpm drive.

Not without either the aforementioned recovery CD's, or without the preinstalled thinkvantage rescue & recovery... it's best to backup that before removing it.

When I boot and press the thinkvantage button, it takes me to the setup screen and has the option of restore and recovery. I think it's embedded in the hard drive. I clicked on restore and it went through, so I clicked cancel :) I want to try it but I don't want to go through the updating/installing antivirus and uninstalling unwanted software. Are you absolutely sure that I lost that privelage?

Just recovered from Thinkvantage, turned out you could do so.

So when you use the Restore and Recovery, the programs/files YOU have put on the system are gone as well? Or does it just restore programs you erased that were first on the machine upon arrival?

Yes and yes, depending on how far you rollback. You can restore back to the factory settings or somewhere thereafter.

Well it's in a separate partition on your drive, to protect people from themselves who don't know that.
Some folks have been know to repartition and wipe clean, to get get rid of every preload and recover every last meg of hd space (thinkvantage consumes a fair bit)
