I uninstalled Adobe Reader 8.12 that came with my T400 and after the
restart, the color depth was at 4 bits and the resolution at 640x480

And I could not change them. The sliders and the pulldown choices were there, and XP would ask me if I wanted to keep the new settings, but nothing had changed.

On top of that, the brightness setting would not change. It was dim, somewhere close to min but not, and though the osd blue bars would change with Fn Home and Fn End, the brightness remained the same.

Several reboots and still the same.
I also checked with msconfig and found that
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\hkcmd.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxtray.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxpers.exe
    were disabled at startup.
running them from the run dialog, or enabling them and rebooting did not fix the problem.

A full restore to last night's backup (phew!) fixed all, but I still loathe Adobe Reader and its bloat.

    Yikes!
