    Hi everyone,

I am new to this forum and I need help... I am deciding which notebook to buy for university. I have never had a notebook before... I think I want to go with IBM because I heard they are the best. What model is best for a university student who will need portability, long battery life, DVD burner, durability, WI-FI capabilities...etc.

Also what is the best processor to get with Centrio Technology... 915 chipset?

    Any help is greatly appreciated!
    Thanks

Seeing that you hadnt gotten a laptop before school started.

Maybe you should wait until the summer and get a new one for next year, meaning your 2nd yr of study.

The reason: Intel is coming out with their dual core processors for laptops, as well ATI is releasing a new more powerful video card for laptops.

Though those thinkpads probably wont have the new video cards, you may consider other laptops, and like me for gaming as well.

But if you really must get a thinkpad and you dont mind paying alot, then check out the x41.

14" T43 with the nine cell battery would be my choice. You might want to consider an external DVD burner as the ThinkPad Panasonic burners are not very good. Good Luck.

maybe you can consider t43 with 14.1 sxga+ with 9cell batter if you dont mind the price and dont play large 3d games,
    :)

I like this option as suggested by thinkpadfan. if you can wait for about 2-weeks the, umm, scenery of available thinkpads will change a bit ;)

Now this is tempting. I've always been a fan of the Thinkpad line, if only they used decent screens (or I should say, nice glossy ones) I would probably jump on one. Abaxter, will the scenery *cough* include a change in display *cough*?

for me as a university student battery life is really important. i have an x41 tablet and it can pump out 5 hours of consistent battery life with wireless on. the T series i had could only last for three.

If all you're doing is taking notes, surfing the web, nothing too intensive, an x series ibm would be the way to go. the x41 model is 3 pounds...only draw back is you'll have to get an external dvd drive. but i can live with that.

Yup, the X series is quite nice. Very light and a leader in it's class. Also take a look at the less expensive competition: Dell X1, Dell 700m (with built in optical drive), Sony VAIO (~10" - not sure on the model name/number) and Fujitsu P7010.

Hey mliu.... i was looking at tablets - how is yours? Is it helpful when taking notes and drawing diagrams? Also, is the notebook less durable with the tablet feature?

Thanks again, all the info is really helpful!

I would get a T43 14 inch laptop. The X series notebook is really nice but it costs more than the T43 and you get less performance.
