I was trying to figure why my function keys weren't working, so all i did was enter my BIOS and go under CONFIG and went to KEYBOARD. Here i enabled the Fn keys and went to start up windows and all i get now is a blue screen that says UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME ahh. I look this up on the internet and it says to insert the xp cd and press R. I did this. Now it says to type in chkdsk/r. This doesn't work. So I type in chkdsk and it says " volume appears to be in good condition and was not checked. Use /p if you want to check the volume anyway" I type this in and it doesn't work ahhh!!!!!!!!!! Tell me what to do!!!!! I Just bought this t40 for school and it was working fine until i changed the FN keys

Question:
Unmountable boot volume in Windows XP.
Cause:
1. This issue can be caused by a corrupt boot.ini
2. This issue can also be caused by a bad hard disk drive
Answer:
Corrupt boot.ini file
1. To resolve this issue you will need to boot into the recovery console, additional information and help with getting into the recovery console can be found on document CH000627.
2. In the recovery console type chkdsk /p to check to see if the disk drive is bad or marked as dirty. See our chkdsk command page for additional information and help with this command. If errors are located during the check skip to the next section.
3. If after performing this check it is unable to locating anything wrong with the hard disk drive, reboot the computer.
4. If after performing this step the computer still has the same issue, reboot the computer and load back into the recovery console.
5. Once back into the recovery console type chkdsk /r to locate any bad sectors and recover any data. If errors are located during the check skip to the next section.
6. Once completed reboot the computer to determine if this has resolve your issue.
* Additional information and help with the boot.ini file can be found on document CH000492.
Note: If after running either of these chkdsk commands your computer is able to successfully boot into Microsoft Windows XP make sure you have all the latest updates for your computer. Additional information about running Windows update can be found on document CH000545.
Seriously corrupted or bad hard disk drive
If while running the above steps you encounter errors with the hard disk drive and/or the above steps do not resolve your issue it is likely your hard disk drive is failing or has already failed. To determine if this is the case it is recommended you run the Windows XP setup, delete all partitions, recreate the partitions, format the hard disk drive, and reinstall Windows XP.
If errors are encountered during the creation of the partitions or the format process it is likely that the hard disk drive is bad and it should be replaced.

I think that i might be the 2nd b/c when i push on the spot where the harddrive is (not hard, sortof like when you pick it up or move it) the screen will go blank and i would have to restart the computer -
ok so i forgot to put a _ (space) between the chkdsk/r and p. so now it says that volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problem. Should i reformated and see if i still have problems?
-
i still have my t22 so i am going to swap hd's and see what happens. wish me luck
-
so i swap the t40 harddrive into my t22 and i ran chkdsk /r and i came up with this volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problem. so is my harddrive bad? I am reformatting the t40 harddrive right now hopefully i will get some where with this
-
I reformatted and my laptop is running perfectly, what gives? Do ya'll think this is temp.? should i still get a new hard drive?
-
so i just uploaded all of my programs and files back to the hard drive seems to be working fine; however, I enabled the (fn) keys in the BIOS and they still don't work
WHAT SHOULD I DO!!! I think I am still going to upgrade to a larger newer hd.
-
So i decided to buy a new hard drive. I hope that this thread will help people in the future if they ever have this error message. I will update this when i install the new hard drive.

Have you installed Lenovo's hotkey application? Check also settings in the keybord configurator from Lenovo.
-
yeah I installed it but still have no standby. Thats all I want is just the sleep mode feature. When I select the turn computer off feature a dialog box comes up and has turn off, restart, and stand by is shaded transparent so you can't click on it. I don't know what to do?
-
If you are talking about the standard windows shutdown dialog, then probably there is something wrong with your windows configuration/drivers. It might be that some windows driver prevents the notebook from entering standby mode. Sometimes windows can report this kind of problems, when the standard log-in dialog is used (same as win 2k), not the Win XP welcome screen. Then the shutdown dialog will have different a different layout.
As alternative solution you could try a different thing. Bind the standby option to the lid close or power button. Then check what windows will say when you will activate standby this way. -
alright I solved the no stand by issue. I downloaded the a driver from Lenovo which scanned my BIOS AND EEPROM and hdd. This scan told me what i needed to update and what i did not have on my cpu. The Driver/program is called system update by lenovo. This was a very useful update b/c it updated my bios and eeprom as well as gave me access to functions that i currently did not have. I still am going to change out my hdd. I hope this solves the issue of dying when i touch that area.
