Every now and then my GTX 660M would "stop" working and force-revert pack to the Intel HD 4000.

And I cant seem to get it back to GTX 660M without restarting my computer.

When I check my device manager it says:

"Standard VGA Graphics Adapter" instead of "nVidia Geforce GTX 660M" and the message says : This device cannot work properly until you restart your computer. (Code 14).

Also, when trying to open up the nVidia control panel it says:

"NVIDIA DISPLAY SETTINGS ARE NOT AVAILABLE

You are not currently using a display attached to an nVidia GPU"

Im currently on the newest beta drivers from nvidia "304.79"

    Help please?

Glad I'm not the only one with this issue. Happens to me too, not sure what's causing it. I'll do a fresh re-install in a bit, and see what the deal is.

Come to think of it - I've played a lot of games since I bought this machine, but this driver crash seems to only occur when I'm at desktop. Never went on me during a game. How about you?

Easy to overlook, but make sure you are installing the intel video drivers and then the nvidia ones. Also, no point in using those beta drivers if you're trying to rule out possible issues. The stock drivers that come with the 580 also offer measurably better performance.

My 660m will not turn on now... Fresh install and I followed the install guide religiously. Used stock lenovo.com drivers. I tried Skyrim and GTA4. They both are using the HD 4000.

I had a similar problem in a Dell with a 650M. I have returned it. That Intel first, nVidia second, did not help me.

Just to let you guys know ive been on the 295.55 drivers and so far ive had no GPU crashes.

Ill monitor this for a few days and see if it really has improved.

And I haven't used the method of first installing Intel drivers, then nvidia. If the problem happens again I'll try that

Driver version 295.93 on a clean install and I never experienced a driver crash. Used the sequence in a Lenovo y570 clean install guide a month ago (intel drivers first and then the Nvidia drivers).

That is exactly what I figured out. I had this gadget that monitored GPU temperature. I got rid of that, and now it never crashes.
