Hey there, new to the forums. Recently, my laptop (ThinkPad T60p, which I bought last August) has been idling at around 30-35%, both processors. Task Manager reports that a process called "System" is using the processors. My system usually idles around 2-5%. Any ideas? Help would be most appreciated.

    Thanks!

It's possible Vista is doing a lot of hard drive indexing and automatic defragmentation at idle, which would explain the processing.

I forgot to mention, I'm running Windows XP Professional, not Vista.

SYSTEM.EXE? Could be a Trojan. What virus software are you running? Make sure Windows XP and your virus software are up-to-date. Run a full system scan for viruses.

I believe there was an update for XP as well for indexing (not 100% sure on this). If this is not the case, check what is using your CPU by reviewing the background processes.

It's not listed as a .exe file. It just says 'System', and it hogs 30-40%. I'll check out the process explorer. Thanks for the help
