Anyone has an experience doing it? Shall we do Disk Image or better if we use the recovery disc created by thinkvantage > create rescue media? I would love to do a clean install but also wants to have the same functions like the original one.

The current one seems to be SATA HDD, can I upgrade to SATA2? The old hdd configuration can be found here http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/5k160/5k160.htm and mine is HTS541616J9SA00

    Thanks guys!

To do a clean install you'll a Windows disc, which the recovery discs are not. All the off the Apps and drivers installed on your machine are stored in the SWTools on the C:\ drive if you need them. If you do a clean install you will lose the use of the ThinkVantage button. Pulling the drive is very easy. There's only one screw involved. Here's a picture of the X61s with the hard drive out.

It has Windows. It will restore the system to factory.

A clean install is different. It does not include the ThinkVantage software (some people consider it bloat), and requires you to locate drivers for any items that Windows doesn't recognize.

I recommend you just use the recovery disks. It is an easy process and gnerates a good system image.

The other option (if you don't want to re-install your software) is to image the old drive onto the new one.

well now that I got my x61 back from the repair center, i have also upgraded to 500GB by seagate. I have also installed rescue and recovery program into the new HDD but now I dont see any rescue and recovery program when loading on windows. But I have managed to open the rescue and recovery from the BIOS load. Another question there is no more program called "Create Rescue Media" programm anymore on the folder thinkvantage. Any ideas what program shall I install to create the new HDD seem to be fresh from the factory? Thanks
