I had to do a restore and recovery and wondering whether at this time I should upgrade my XP to SP3 and if so, what is the suggested route for doing so? I thought that ThinkVantage would alert me about this upgrade or provide a path for doing it but I haven't seen it. Currently I have SP2 Version 2002 XP Professional.

    Thanks in advance.

Download it directly from Microsoft and you should be fine.

If you're doing a clean install anyway, why not install Win7?

look for nlite, it is a freeware which will allow you to create an XP CD with integrated SP3. This will save you the hassle of installing XP and then SP3.

While XP SP3 has been around “forever,” it is, very much, a legacy OS and I highly concur with the above.

I may as well install Win 7 I guess because my SP3 update via the MS web site keeps crashing like crazy. Fatal sub System error or something like that. Memory dump. Yeesh.

Hard to understand why that would happen on a fresh install of an OS (XP). Hope it's not hardware related. But Win 7 is still the way to go anyway.

I didn't have a fresh install -- to clarify, I did a quick rescue and recovery after a crash, but the r and r did not address the issue. I also hope it's not a hardware issue.

I have been having the same issue, installed XP twice, and it kept on BSODing I dont know what it might be but i think i need a new XP disk, the one i used was scratched and when installing at 99% it would usaully skip a file or two.
