Theres really no point, you got some pretty decent specs. If you really want buy an SSD but that will set you back a lot of $$$ for a decent one. What do you use your computer for primarily? If its just web-browsing and microsoft office stuff, I'd say its a waste of money to do anything.

Step up to 17 inch laptops as they often have the space for the fastest components. If you however you insist on 15 inch, check out the alienware m15x. Will no doubt suit your power needs as it can be configured to be one of the fastest 15" notebooks in the industry (core 2 extreme, geforce 9800GT w/512mb). As far as hard drive, you have to sacrific space for performance (SSD), otherwise you cant do much there as far as upgrades.

Nontheless you already have one of the fastest laptops on the markets that should easily handle your accounting needs.

    So choices:

    1. Look into 17" notebooks
    2. Look into alienware, or other similar niche laptop manufactures
    3. Upgrade your already powerful laptop to SSD (and suffer storage space).

Those high end video cards will do nothing for his performance though since he doesn't game or do anything graphically intensive.

well you'll have to wait .. since 64gb is the highest with SLC design

but then, you could compress the drive .. so depending on what you use you could go above 80GB of space

here, second thought: buy two 64GB SSDs, and put the second one on the place of the CD/DVD drive :p

All manudacturers use the same components. Unless you want a computer with an extreme or quad processor, or a really high end video card, they are all the same in terms of speed.

x-25m is a really good mlc ssd (hard drive)

no, it is SSD, with about 220MB/s or more read speed :)
but depends if your laptop will allow it or not.

A newer laptop will not be that much faster than what you have now. Wait for the next cycle. Hell, you laptop is probably faster than my new T400...

I agree, I'm not really seeing why you think your current laptop is slow. It could be the hard-drive if its 5400, so maybe just get a new 320gb 7200RPM or the Intel SSD

Like others have said you have a pretty fast machine there, going to be hard to find anything else faster. I have basically the same machine and it screams. If you want something fast in general look on running a streamlined version of Linux with a window manager like Fluxbox.

Only things that I know of that would faster would be a laptop with quad core CPU, SSD, and 8GB of DDR3 RAM. I think these would be very hard to find in a 14" machine currently...

Thank you for you help, I went to review some machines, after read your comments and found this machine, please let me help to know If I am taking good decision:

    Lenovo T400
    Intel T9600 2.80Ghz 6MB L2 Cache Centrino 2 Motevino Processor - 1066Mhz FSB
    14.1" WXGA+ (1440 x 900) LED BackLight Widescreen - Highest Resolution
Dedicated ATI Mobility 3470 with HD Boost
    4GB DDR3 PC3-8600 1066Mhz RAM
2GB Intel Turbo FLASH Disk Cache Accelerator
128GB SOLID STATE DISK (SSD) with Active Shock Protection

They told me that I would upgrade the RAM to 8 GB is true ?

Do you think that this machine would be fast ?

    Thanks,

Its gonna be fast, but the main difference between your current computer and this one would most likely be the SSD. It would be cheaper for you to just buy an SSD for your current machine than to spend $2000 or so on that whole new machine.

I think that the T400 you posted will be a little bit faster, but not by a lot. I don't think it is worth it to upgrade from what you have to the T400. Are desktops out of the question for you? If you want something much faster than the t61p you might want to look at desktops with a very high end processor($$$$).

I don't have much experience with SSDs, but have looked into them a little. They are still maturing. The MLC technology is much better than the SLC, but also costs a lot more. Read up a bit on SSDs around the web and also on this board. Check out Les's thread here. Also look at his sig for a bunch more info about SSDs.

You have essentially exhausted all your laptop options as far as speed is concerned. You basically have the fastest that is available presently. Any modifications you do will help minimally in terms of performance gain. So just enjoy what you have. My sugguestion however would be to also purchase a desktop machine as thats really the only way to satisfy your power needs. You can use the laptop when you need the portability, and the desktop when you need the power.
