I just ordered a Thinkpad T61 a few days ago and just realized that by picking the CD/DVD Combo I can't burn DVDs. Not that its really a problem because I can burn DVDs with my desktop but I thought it'd be pretty annoying to have 6-7 CDs for recovery. I'm just wondering (if I decide to in the future) if its possible to upgrade to a DVD burner. Can you just drop in a Slim DVD Burner drive? Like this for example:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827151132

Or do you have to get some special IBM/Lenovo DVD burner for the T series?

    Welcome to the forums!

It is possible to upgrade to a DVD-burner in the future. However, the T series use a nonstandard 9.5mm drive height as opposed to the standard 12.7mm height, so the one that you linked from Newegg will not work.

Anything that is labeled as "Ultrabay Slim" will fit in the drive bay.

Thanks. I figured as much. So I'd have to buy a DVD Recordable optical drive from Lenovo then? I looked it up and it's going for about $210. That's pretty pricey. I think I'll just stick to the CD/DVD drive haha.

I see some older drives going on ebay that are pulled from T40s and such. Would those work?
