Looking to get a 7k320 to put into my T61p now since its only $79 after mail in rebate from newegg. I want to copy over EXACTLY what I have now onto the new drive. Just want to clarify the steps necessary. Im looking to burn recover CD's off my computer now and run a backup of rescue and recovery. Then install the recovery cd's on the new hard drive after installed. After that I can recover my data from the backup....correct? If I complete these steps I will have exactly the same image just with bigger HD correct?

    Thanks in advance!

If you want to maintain the existing image (including data), recovery discs may not be your best option.

You will be better served by a hard drive imaging/cloning program e.g. Acronis or SelfImage (free and what I used). This method will also require you to buy a USB SATA enclosure, or the Ultrabay hard drive adapter, or use a desktop with 2 free SATA ports (this is what I did).

You may also need to resize your partitions after you do this. Vista has a built in partition resizer, but I used GParted on SystemRescueCD because it runs outside Windows and doesn't have any restrictions.

Well what about running R&R and booting from that after the fresh HD install....cant I restore my OS to that drive from the backup on my external that I made?

Maybe. I don't have that much experience with Rescue and Recovery. I have used the restore to FACTORY preload. However, you will have to reinstall all of your applications and transfer your data files after recovering your system using this method.

I cloned using Acronis and the new drive in the ultrabay. It was well worth the money, allowed me to clone my windows and recovery partition. Acronis can also resize the partitions.

Like Jon, I never tried using your method. The restore discs will factory restore, but I never tried rescue and recovery.

    Jon,

Vista based methods of backing up the the system disk are fine as long as the partition size remains the same which was put in for protection.
