    Hi,

I just bought 4GB memory to upgrade my 2x1GB to 2x2GB.

I know there are limitations to Windows 32-bit with regards to RAM.

Do I need to configure anything special to get the most out of the upgrade or just plug and play?

    Thanks.

Its Plug n Play. And nothing to do in Windows, if the pagefile is system-managed.

I know it's not the question you asked, but I agree with Meetloaf13. I think you should consider going x64.

Good idea - just make sure any software you use is compatible with the 64 bit system ... I have heard there are still a few apps out there that cannot make the cross over.

There are a few...but they are typically proprietary apps related to business-use. Most mainstream programs work perfectly if not better.

But, Mycanid is right, this is the MAIN roadblock. Driver issues have almost disappeared.

Is the system efficiency so markedly better at x64 that it is worth the cost to upgrade?

I've been finding x32 Vista Ultimate (bundled with my T61) to be just fine. Not sure I'd want to drop the dough to upgrade.

It shouldn't cost you to upgrade from Vista Ultimate 32 to 64.

If you already have the notebook, you can get a Vista 64 disc, and install using the key printed on the COA. If it doesn't activate, etc....Call up MS, give the computer voice the key, and it'll give u an activation code.

    Define "Efficiency"

x64 isn't necessarily more efficient with say, your RAM. In fact it uses more of it, as it should, that's why you bought it, so that you could use it, not let is sit there at 10% usage.

But, your life might be more efficient, like .5% b/c your programs are snappier! Haha, seriously though, my anecdotal evidence has led me to LOVE Vista x64, whereas I am not enamored (and at times very frustrated) with the x86 variety. It just feels more solid/snappier/polished...that's my 2 cents.

Thanks guys. This is pretty informative. I'm gonna look further into this.

Specific drivers for x64 aside, is all x32 software able to run well on x64?

    32-bit apps work, 16-bit apps won't.

32-bit Apps/Tools that require a driver to be installed, won't work as well.
