I'm trying to clone my 80gb factory drive on my new T400 to a 320gb drive. I'm having huge issues with it and i have a feeling it has to do with the partition S that is installed from the factory with the lenovo stuff. Has anyone cloned a factory HD and if so mind sharing the steps i should take, since Acronis is cutting it right now. Thanks

I used Acronis to make a full disk image of my 250GB 5400rpm drive and then restored that image onto a 250GB 7200rpm drive.

I didn't do anything special to make it work other than upgrading from Acronis 9 to Acronis 11.

One thought though -- make sure Acronis isn't resizing the partitions, do it straight over then resize the C: partition later.

And still do a full backup to an external drive just for good measure.

Ahhh that might be my issue. When i clone the drive i have it resize them. I'll try doing a straight clone over and than resize them after the fact. Thanks.

I had the same problems using Acronis and trying and clone from my 80 gb to a new 320 gb drive. Resizing or not resizing did not make a difference to me, all that showed up on the new cloned drive was the S: partition, and the drive could not boot into Windows. I spent an evening trying different settings and guides, and gave up after 5 attempts with Acronis and went with a different program instead, HDClone.

It won't allow you to resize your partition at the time of cloning, but that was easy enough to do afterwards. I worked like it should, so I was happy with it. The first time I booted into Windows I had an error, that Windows had not been shut down properly but a scan to check for drive consistency revealed no problems, and I haven't had the issue since. I have no clue why Acronis didn't work for me, it seems to be the go-to program for most people looking to clone, but I would suggest trying something else.

i give up. I tried doing an image with Acronis, a clone with Acronis and cloning with HDClone. I guess i'll either do a clean install or just install the recovery disks for now on the new hd. Why lenovo/vista had to make this so hard, i have no idea!

Have you tried making a full backup to an external drive, swapping the primary HDD to your new disc, then restoring the backup to the new drive? I did this and it worked fine.

Also to double check: you are using the latest version of Acronis, right?

Yup tried that last night (with latest version of Acronis). I guess this seals the deal for me on whether i should just do a clean install of vista or not!
