With the current discount, I was able to configure this beast:
ThinkPad T61 - 1 Yr Depot Warranty
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T7300 (2.0GHz 800MHz 4MBL2)[1]
Genuine Windows Vista Home Basic[12]
14.1 SXGA+ TFT
NVIDIA Quadro FX 570M (128MB)
512 MB PC2-5300 SDRAM DDR2 667MHz SODIMM Memory (1 DIMM)[8]
UltraNav (TrackPoint and TouchPad)
60GB Hard Disk Drive, 5400rpm[4]
DVD-ROM 8x Max, Ultrabay Slim[5]
Integrated Wi-Fi wireless upgradable[10]
6 cell Li-Ion Battery[60]
8891: Express - 1 Yr Depot Warranty[7]
ThinkPad Advanced Ultrabay Battery
For a grand total of $1,052.10 after USPTSERIES14. Now, this one here has few options that are not included in the current Lenovo page, this is because I used an old link to configure it.
But also because of these old options, you may notice that few things REQUIRE after-market upgrades. So here are my questions:
1) Are both RAM slots on the T61p accessible from bottom? As in, no keyboard-removal required?
2) Is replacing harddrive easy? And what's your take on its performance with a 200Gb 7200rpm?
3) Is the Ultrabay Batt useful? I got the 6-cell + Ub Batt instead of 9-cell because I hate having that thing sticking out, but I've heard bad things about the Ub Batt's lifespan, and that it's always the first one that gets drained and there's no option to set it. (I got the worst optical drive because I won't be using it at all, it's always going to be the battery in the Ultrabay)
4) Does "Integrated Wi-Fi Wireless Upgradable" simply mean "no WLAN card, PCIe slot open"? If so, does this option include the 3rd antenna for a 802.11N WLAN card? If not, is the Atheros card the only one that supports A/B/G/N draft 2.0?
-
2) The Anandtech web site should have a benchmark roundup out soon for 2.5" drives Storagereview already has some benchmarks
3) the ultrabay battery is Li-poly so it will not have as many recharge cycles as the "normal" battery before it wears out.
I don't understand this option:
Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN [add $70.00 $52.50]
Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN (11n disabled) [add $30.00 $22.50]
If its the same card why is it cheaper without 11n? Would make it seem like more then just a config difference -
I assume with 11n disabled, it means the 3rd antenna is not included
-
After a little research, I believe:
1) Both RAM slots are under the palm rest.
2) Doesn't matter, I'll be getting a 200 7200 hd anyways
3) Doesn't matter, I'll be getting a 6 + 3 anyways
4) Still don't know.
With the "Integrated Wi-Fi Wireless Upgradable", will I get a 3rd antenna in my T61p? -
Replacing the SoDIMMS is easy, but go slow/careful and don't hose the trackpad ribbon cable. Replacing the primary hard drive is also easy.
Upgrading WLAN and RAM on a T61p...
