when i bought my t400 i didn't think about warranty...but after reading the forums more and thinking about what happens if my lcd or something just suddenly stops working after 1 year...i'm thinking about upgrading to a 3 year warranty.

how much will it cost? and in 3 years won't new technology come out and make me wanna replace my t400?

I'm curious about this, too. More specifically, I'm going to upgrade to some on-site support after all my experiences with Lenovo.

I'll probably be calling them tomorrow, and will investigate if no one comes back with a definative answer.

The best thing to do is probably call them, becasue the cost will probably vary depending on which channel you purchased it through, and where you're located, etc...I'm sure they'd take the difference between what you paid and what the new support level would cost.

in the past, Dell, for example, has always sent me the option to upgrade the Iwarrenty after say a few months since they want to upsell and generate more revenue from the sale.

I am a firm believer in the extended warranty.. I posted a couple of times of my experiences.. I also believe its worth it to get it with the Accidental protection option... others have different opinions on it..

what was the $156 for, the 1 year depot upgraded to 3 year depot? which machine type did you get?

I got the 3 year depot for my x200. It cost about an extra $110. I had a few issues with my earlier T40 in the second and third year (optical drive stopped reading DVDs, and flex caused the Graphics card connection to become desoldered from the main board [this was why they developed the roll cage]). I was very pleased with IBM support on that machine (limited questions, overnight shipping on parts), and decided it was worth it on my x200.

Thinkpads are expensive, and generally remain useful for several years. However, if something bad does happen to them it is extremely expensive to have them fixed if they are not under warranty. Therefore I think 3 years is the way to go.

the lady was trying to overcharge me or something..

No that is not 2 more years that is 2 years TOTAL. I upgraded my x200 afterwards and it was $119 to extend it to 3 years depot. On the website it was slightly discounted at about $100 but they said $119 on the phone and I was too lazy to argue about $20.

if it were my, I would upgrade to the 3 yr depot + TPP (or even the 4 yr depot + TPP if you have the extra $$)

looks like the 4yr depot + TPP should run around $284 and the 3yr + TPP $208
(with the approx 25% edu it looked like they were giving you)

I have an x40, and upgraded to the 4yr depot + TPP and it paid for itself over and over.. here are my 2 posts on the topic:

its accidental protection.. now this is all assuming US (which I probably should have said in the beginning not know if you were US or international)..

but it to add TPP is must be within the first 30 days.. not sure if your in that window.. otherwise TPP is not an option anyway..

so if you drop it, crack the screen.. get all your keys pulled off by your 2 year old or have your kids think its a pillow and jump on it( both like me).. get coffee spilled on it.. etc.. you get the idea.. its all covered.. nothing to worry about.. they just fix it and send it back to you..

the answer is yes, you probably will want to replace the t400 in 3 years, but if its breaks and has the warranty.. you can either A) get it fixed and sell it using the proceeds towards the new laptop and even if you only got back the warranty cost, it was piece of mind.. or B) at least have the option NOT to get a new machine since its going to be fixed..

in the case of no warranty.. you dont have much of a choice.. broken is broken.. it wont be worth fixing, you will have to spend the $$ to get a new laptop

hmm you made some good points.

do you know how long i have to upgrade a depot warranty? is it the first 30 days just as the TPP?

dont quote me on it.. but i thought I remembered reading you can do it either within the first year, or as long as its within the exisiting warranty.. that does not apply to the TPP which is during the 30 days only.. but that is something I am sure lenovo can answer for sure..
