So, I got the Y550 for almost nothing - and it came with the T6600 processor - which is not the best one and doesn't support VT. I would like to upgrade the processor and upon a quick inspection, it might be easier than I expected.
Its socket is mPGA 478mn and I would like to upgrade to the Intel Core 2 Duo P9600..( Mobile micro-FCPGA / Socket P (mPGA478MN) ) any ideas? How can I check if my motherboard will support it?
Thanks!

yes your mobo is supported. However changing the cpu isnt for the faint hearted.
If you want I can show you the videos of how to replace your cpu -
Yes, I would love to see it. Thanks!

This will void the warranty.
Also, unfortunately, it happens that the site does not have videos on your exact model.
With this said, you should still be able to do it. It requires some computer and mechanical savvy-ness
http://www.lenovoservicetraining.com/ion/ click on notebooks, select thinkpad then T61, then FRU removal. Be sure to take out the:
battery
Palm Rest
Keyboard
Keyboard Bezel
before taking out the CPU. After taking out the keyboard bezel, you should take out the CPU fan and then to the processor itself.
I also recommend taking out the DIMM as well
Again this process isnt easy since Lenovo does not have videos of the Y550. You will have to do some kind of guesswork on disassembly, and this will void the warranty! -
Hi there, thanks for the link. I will definitely use it for now and for future upgrades.
I went ahead and took some pictures of the CPU:

what you say? -
there is a possibility that the processor is soldered on the motherboard
just warnin ya -
I just checked, it is free.
-
any reason why i wouldnt go with Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor T9550 (6M Cache, 2.66 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB) instead of the P9600?
-

There is almost no difference between the two. If your budget allows it, go fot the 9600, otherwise get the 9550.
Very Good! I see that 6600 chip there. I hope the video helped! -
Almost all CPUs are socketed these day. Only the ultraportables are soldered. If you're looking for a performance boost a faster hard drive or SSD is much more likely to give you one than the CPU.
-
I do need the space on my HD though... and the price of a hdd that I would need is 500$ +
-
Then I would suggest saving your money.
-
Zaz, I understand.
Last night I was pretty set on the Intel Core 2 Duo P8700 Penryn 2.53GHz but then I held back and I am thinking about the Intel Core 2 Quad Q9000 Penryn 2.0GHz. Would it still be a waster of money? Ive been looking at the benchmarks and it does look pretty good. -
Depending on the aftermarket prices, I'd probably recommend getting a processor like the P8x00 (good core clock speed, relatively low voltage, fast FSB, 3MB L2 cache, Virtualization support, 25w TDP). -
Yes, some other members recommended the 8700. I guess I got a little bit power hungry with the thought of having a Q9000.. I would use the 8700 (since I really need VT) and I will save my money and get something else next year.
-
the diadvantage of the q9000 is that it would drain battery like crazy and it would heat up your system like crazy. i would also suggest you stay with the p8700.
@zaz: The macbook pro has its cpu soldered on board... -
I said almost all, not all.
-
it worked. i will be posting more info soon.

good review! So im a bit confused which processor you got for it. I saw the 8700 on your bios, but the later you said you wished you got the 8700 instead of the Q9000
-
I got the 8700. sorry, I meant that i would have ordered from Lenovo already with the P8700 instead of the T6600
-
Checked out your site. Looks like an easy CPU change. How's the performance of your GT240M? Considering your option.
-
performance is great.. I play all the latest games with no glitch or lag.
-
Thanks! Will look at the Y550.
