Hi, I ordered a Y550 last week, and I'm currently waiting for it to arrive. However, I'm just wondering if upgrading the CPU will void the warranty.
I searched online, and someone called in where the CSR said that yes, it will void the warranty, but I'm curious if the Lenovo laptops have any seals or anything.
Thanks

I know on ThinkPads, not sure about the Lenovo branded notebook, the CPUs are bar coded.

What do you mean by barcoded CPUs? Is there a barcode on the CPU that's specific to the model that Lenovo has printed on, or is it printed on by the manufacturer? Because if it's the latter, I could go around it by purchasing another CPU with a printed barcode, right?

It should not void your warranty in general, but if you have problems with the CPU or if the CPU is installed incorrectly and causes other parts to fail, then Lenovo does not have to honor warranty on the CPU or related parts. Instead you would have to go through Intel for the warranty coverage on the new CPU.
However, Lenovo tech support can often be picky and they might refuse to honor your warranty simply because the CPU you upgraded was not in the system originally. I know I've had a tech hang up on me as soon as I mentioned SSD because "it didn't come with the computer."
Luck of the draw I guess.
