I just bought a z60m and want to upgrade the hard drive to a 80gb Hitachi Travelstar 5K100. I was wondering if anyone has tried this before and is it difficult? Will I have to upgrade the firmware on the hard drive or can I just plug the hard drive in and install an os on it? Thanks in advance.

Make sure you get a SATA drive. Also make sure you burn off the recovery discs before removing the original drive. Other than that it is fairly easy. Remove the screw holding the hard drive in, slide out the drive, swap the drives and slide it back in. Then put the Rescue and Recovery disc in to start re-installing.
