Right now I have 2 gigs in my R61, but Ive been doing more video editing and I think I need more ram. I have the 8100 processor so thats fairly fast, and I know the R61 has only two slots ( I believe ). Right now CPU-Z tells me the memory is DDR2 running at 333mhz, which I assume is DDR2 666. Can I overclock this laptop at all by using faster memory, or is it not worth it?

Veesta only takes 3GB if you are usin dat. Check Crucial. Their memory plays well on a T including wuns that came wit Hynix.

You can use faster memory, but it will downclock.

Yep you can use 800mhz ram or 1066mhz ram (if you can find a DDR2 sodimm at that speed). But the memory will downclock to 667mhz.

I would say it's worth going for 4gb of ram.

Ah ok, not worth it then if its just going to be limited. Are these thinkpads very finicky with memory? I wanted to get some cheap stuff on black friday (not low quality, just cheap, maybe some corsair or something)

ThinkPads of yore could be very finicky about memory. The newer ones are better.

if you have the 64 bit OS, you can get 8 gig of ram for the R61. For most video editting on laptops of that generation anything more than 4 gigs is a waste of money, since the CPU and FSB will be the bottleneck. I would get 4 gigs and also a SSD, to get the best result for your video editting work.

I also have an R61 with 2GB of RAM (2 pieces) running the 32-bit Win7 (I know, I should have probably installed the 64-bit version, but I didn't...). If I wanted to jump from 2GB to 3GB of RAM, would swapping out one of the 1GB DIMMs for a 2GB DIMM work (one 2GB + one 1GB =3GB)? Reading BaldwinHillsTrojan's sig, I assume the two DIMMS don't need to match.

Also, should I be careful about the brand of memory, or trust as ZAZ says, that newer ThinkPads are less fussy about this.

    Thx, ~john

No works fine da way I set mine up. Used like this from day 1 as Veesta32 wouldnt recognize it anyway and I didnt feel like spending more than I had to! Of course I'm curious how a matching pair would run but I wasnt going to dump the stock RAM Loonovo used so just got one stick of 2. W764 quite zippy. Veesta32 OK too but I dont mess with videos like you. Just excel work. BTW I trust Crucial. Kingston is also OK but in general prefer Crucial. Sure there is better and also there is cheaper. Dont overpay with some of the brands others recommend but also steer clear of generic RAM.
