My order is being delayed because the original laptop, a T9300 with 1680x1050 screen is out of stock. It is going to be shipped to them by the end of the week.

The sales rep is offering a T7700 with 1920x1200 screen, and with no extra charge in price that will ship instantly. Now, with all else being equal, ceteris paribus, which is the better deal?

I'm not too particular about screens and stuff, and frankly I'm afraid that the 1920x1200 screen might have fonts too small in XP Prof(the OS that comes with it), and I read that the 1920x1200 screen has bleeding issues. And I'm going to install Ubuntu, anyway.

Does the T9300 have any big advantage over the T7700 except for the 0.1Ghz clock speed?

I believe all the Penryn processors are more power effecient than the last batch.

You can change the defauklt font size in windows, but there will still be a few dialogues that use the standard size. Gnome/Linux is no problem for fonts. I wish I had that screen in my laptop.

In a word processor the text should actually be clearer than in a low resolution screen because there will be more pixels making up each character.

Yeah, Penryn uses the 45nm instead of 65nm.

So, I should stick to my current order of T9300 & 168x1050?

i dont think the processor is that big of a difference honestly. but the screen is kinda big. I would stick with the current resolution you have selected. 1920X1200 is true Hi def 1080P and looks great in my living room. But for me is too small for a laptop. my opinion only of course is to keep your current config and wait. good luck.

I love my T7700 + 1920, but it is all preference. I will never go down in resolution after this because it works perfectly for what I do. The Penryn will be better on the battery, but it is all dependent. If you are not particular, stick with the 9300.

I'm thinking the same, but just want to know if my opinions/choices are wise/futureproof.

The T9300 is the newer Penryn core, it runs cooler and uses less energy.

I ordered the T9300 processor. Does that mean my laptop will be delayed?

I'm not sure with that, because I ordered from Euclid Computers, not from Lenovo directly.

Right. I decided to wait out the previous offer. Thanks to all that helped make my decision.

Do they order through Lenovo or they make them and sell them or something?

Why, they get it through Lenovo, of course.

The penryn also has a larger onboard cache, and a few new instructions in the microcode - don't know if either will matter for a while.

1680 x 1050's outta stock? Does this mean that new orders for the T61p are getting new screens instead of older models from the T60 series?

I'm not too sure about that. I don't think it's the screen that's out of stock, but the laptop spec that I ordered in general. If the laptop that I ordered from "the previous batch" was sold out, it might be possible that they'll install a newer screen for the laptop that is going to be shipped to me from "the new batch".

However, I doubt it, as the the rumour is that the new screens will be LED, and that they'll try to clear off all the old screens through this clearance. Which means it's most likely a T60 screen. I wouldn't know, of course, if it's LG or Samsung.

The two significant advantages of the T9300 over the T7700 are superior power management and the T9300 has 6mb of L2 cache memory compared to the T7700's 4mb of L2 cache. The additional L2 isn't a huge factor right now, but could be more significant in the near future as more programs utilize that capability.

The 1920x1200 is overkill for a 15.4", in my opinion. The 1680x1050 is much easier on the eyes.
