To cut a long story short:

I ordered a T60, and then decided I wanted a slightly different spec so called Lenovo and asked for an exchange so they shipped me a new T60 (seperate payment) and now I am just about to ship the old one back.

Problem is when I put the two side by side my first T60 which has a Toshiba 80Gb HDD sounds much quieter while the my second T60 which has a (I think) Hitachi (HTS54...) 80Gb HDD sounds slightly louder and crankier.

Question dear advisor is do you think Lenovo will complain if I take the HDD from the fist T60 and put it in the second T60 and send the first one back with the Hitachi HDD??

Note that, both are exactly same spec and both laptops are brand new (<21 days since order).

I need to ship the first one back so please let me know what you think as soon as possible! Please!!

I doubt they will notice. Whether or not it's ethical is another matter. >_>

    Hopefully others will chime in.

try the Hitachi Feature Tool before returning either one. You can adjust the acoustic settings for the drives with the utility.

    good luck!

****! I love this forum - thanks for the quick reply guys.

Is it Ethical to swap the HDDs? I am sending them back the what they sent me (except from different machines).

I am going to try the Hitachi tool but the I love the Toshiba HDD its all so quite without running any tools on it! And it does not "cycle" like every 1 sec unlike the other one.

BTW: How do I find out which HDD, Screen and Keyboard I have? I read somewhere to go the Lenovo support site - but can't seem to get much detail?

Update: Also found out that the first T60 I ordered also has a NMB keyboard the second one has Chicony also the first has Samsung LCD (albeit with small red dead pixel) while the second one is something call TMD - with no dead pixels.

I get the feeling, the 2613CTO model (second one) has been put together with cheaper parts (hmm could CTO stand for Cheaper Thinkpad Order?)! I have a good mind to take good the parts I like from the first one (2613HJU) (keyboard and harddisk) and stick them into make my second one (CTO) to make it more of the quality I would expect for Lenovo.

I am also thinking whether I should just call them and ask them if I can go ahead and swap those two things??

on the order page, isn't there a part number fo the HDD that would be associated with a particular manufacturer?

if they are the exact same model, I don't see any moral or ethical dilemma in changing the parts since they are equivalent to each other in the manufacturer's point of view.

Yea, I doubt they would know.... As long as the hard drives have the exact same specs for speed and size, I doubt it's an issue. Same with the keyboard and screen.

Just called the 1-866-96-THINK number and the guy at the other end of the phone said that they would not allow the parts to be swapped in any circumstances. So I am reading that as a chance and am going to call the parts department and see what they say. (I am nothing if not persistent in what I want!) Esp when I pay soo much money to buy something - at the very least I should be 100% satisfied with it (or is that asking too much these days?).
