Hello, All. My first post. Anyway, I was thinking of buying a gently used Thinkpad T40 from a friend of a relative for $1175. I've seen it and it looks almost new. The seller said he hasn't used it much since buying it in June of 2004, and he sent me some info. I was really hoping somebody could tell me whether this is a reasonable deal or not. Thanks very much for whatever advice or thoughts you can offer.
Thinkpad T40, 1.6 GHZ, 1 GB RAM (2 x 512) , 60 GB 7200 RPM Hitachi HD
IBM model # 2373-94U, comes with XP Professional & original IBM restore CDs, IBM warranty until June 2007
Original 80 GB 4200 RPM HD included, with Ultrabay 2000 & extra HD caddy. Screen: 14.1", 1400x1050; GPU: 32 MB Radeon 9000; DVD-ROM/CDRW; Intel 802.11b Centrino wireless; 9 cell battery
P.S. I've seen some pretty nice looking T42 models for not much more than this used T40, but most of the ones I've looked at are 1024x768, and of course they don't come with two hard drives, etc., and I'd have to pay shipping and maybe tax.
Thanks again.

about 8 months ago, I was also looking to buy a used T40p and found one for US$1099.00 it had a 1400x1050 14"screen but had a FireGL type GPU with 64MB dedicated. I think these models use the first generation centrino chipsets/wifi/cpu combination.

but your system does have 1gig of ram and a faster HD too.
try to look around google or ebay for that specific model to get an idea on the price others sell it. -
I got a T41p a year or so back with very similar specs: 1.7ghz, 1gig of ram, 60gig 7200 rpm hdd, same screen. I paid about $1600 with a 3 yr warranty so your price isn't bad, great machine by the way.

If you are willing to spend a few hundred more and do a rebate you can get this. The extra few hundred will get a three year warranty, nine cell battery and DVD burner, but you'll lose the 7200RPM drive and extra memory. Keep in mind when buying on the internet there are no returns.

Thanks very much for the replies. I should probably get back to the seller today. I'm inclined to buy the machine in my original post. If it were an Ebay sale, I'd be reluctant, but because I've seen it, know the seller at least peripherally, and the condition looks so good, I am less concerned. And I was hoping to get a T series laptop with 1 GB RAM and a lot of hard drive space.
Thanks again.
