I'm thinking about picking this up as a cheap round-the-house ebook reader and browser. (I also adore the design, durability, and linux compatibility, so I'm dead-set on a Thinkpad.)

But I have second thoughts after reading about the notorious GPU solder issue.

I'm also looking at this T42 which looks like a steal with 2GB ram and 100GB HD: http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/nva/sys/515516396.html

What are your thoughts? Should I spare the risk on buying hardware so old, or take the plunge and go with a tried and true platform?

I think that the T42 would be great for just Browsing and ebooks. I have a old A21m and i can still do most basic things with it. I just put PCLinuxOS on it and used the Fluxbox Window manager, and it zips right along on the web. So if i can do that with only 799mhz PIII, 128mb ram and a 20gb 4200rpm hdd... I think either one would be great for your needs.
