Theoretically, if you had this choice, which would you pick? Both machines would be configured equally (DVD-RW, 64GB SSD, 2GB RAM), and assume the X300 is in excellent condition.

At that small of a price spread I would opt for the x301.

The x301 has the following principal advantages:

    • 1.4GHz vs. 1.2GHz processor (both are ULV w/ a 10W TDP)
    • Faster FSB
    • DDR3 memory (faster, uses less power)
    • DisplayPort
    • x4500 vs. x3100 GPU (the x4500 accelerates decoding of h264 and VC-1 video [e.g. Blu-Ray and 720P MKVs])

To me, this combination of advancements is worth a couple hundred dollars more than the x300. However, the way the prices have been (<$1400 for the x300, and >$2400 for the x301) it has been very difficult for me to recommend the x301 to anyone.

I just checked, there is a ebay seller selling X301 only for $1400 plus shipping from AU.
OMG, this is super amazing price.

I saw that $1400 X301 from UA on eBay... if it's the same one, caution because it's got a spinning 5400rpm drive, not an SSD. Not sure if that would be all that great in an X301.

yes, the x301 is not refurbished, but brand new (it’s factory sealed, and I checked the serial number). I actually have bought both (one off craigslist, one off ebay), and I’m just trying to figure out which to sell, and which to keep. It’s a tough choice, because the price I got on the x301 is really stellar, but I was just not planning on spending more than a grand on my new laptop (1 month ago, I was not even thinking about getting a new laptop). It’s really a tough choice. I think by reselling the x300 I can break even or make up to 150. With the x301 I think I can at least break even and possibly make up to 200 or 250.

    Any thoughts?

no, i bought it from a US seller. i ended up paying 1450, but i got about 50 back with a 3% cashback. i was very very lucky to get that price.

but i don't know which to keep. sure the price difference is narrow, but 400 dollars is still quite a sum of money.... hrmm...

Keep whatever you think you'll be satisfied with. Whatever the price is, if you're not happy with it, it's not worth it.
