On flamenko's vista tips and tweaks thread, it said that you could insert a USB thumb drive and use the USB drive as extra ram on your laptop by enabling ready boost. I was wondering if this would be possible using SD memory as it is very cheap and very easy to plug into a laptop (doesnt require any dissasembly).

    What do you guys think?

It isn't nearly as fast or effective as installing new RAM, but if you have < 2 GB of RAM, it may help speeds somewhat.

I think that ReadyBoost was really meant for older systems that couldn't support more RAM.

In any case, installing more RAM helps more than ReadyBoost in most situations. However, like Lithus said, it may be beneficial in systems with less than 2GB of memory.

Just to answer your question. Yes, it's possible. I'm using a 4GB SDHC card in my memory card slot for ready boost.

So if I have an X61 with 2 Gb of ram, wouldnt I still notice a performance boost by using a 2Gb or 4Gb SDHC card? Right now its an empty slot on my computer and if people have a card laying around doing nothing or want to spend $20 to buy one, wouldnt it still give any system a kick? I wonder if someone could do benchmarks to see if it helps or hurts the system.

As you can see from my spec in my sig, I have 4GB RAM, 1GB Turbo Memory, and 4GB SDHC card. I do not notice any performance benefit except for launching very demanding applications such as Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Premiere. the time it takes those applications to start-up is substantially less with the 4GB of readyboost on my system. Is that enough to justify the cost of the card? That's up to you.

I have the same config. as Stallen and the only performance boost I see are Photoshop apps and Microsoft programs, *ie: office, one note, outlook* the start-up times are less than 2 seconds for Microsoft and a few seconds shaved from Photoshop.
