Running a T500 on Windows 7. It's worth mentioning that I've never used the numpad on my laptop before. On my old Acer laptop, the numpad keys were accessed by holding Fn and then pressing the buttons; those keys were, however, blue, meaning that they probably aren't accessed the same way on a Thinkpad. This also means that I can't insert Unicode characters, which is a bit of a pain.

I can type the keys by enabling NumLock, but having to enable it every-bloody-time is as big a chore as pressing Caps Lock, every time you want a capital letter.

There must be some way to insert the keys on the fly - right?

I don't know of any way to do so. Pretty much all laptops I've used have relied on NumLock to utilize the numpad keys.
