    Hello guys,
I'm about to buy video card from an IBM laptop, but I was wondering do they use video BIOS lock on their cards? I found a lot of info on that and it is 60 to 40 % that their cards are not compatible with other laptops. I need your oppinion about that.
Any help is much presiated. Thank you.

I'd say it's 0% compatible with other laptops.

ZaZ, you mean that they did all the possible tricks to lock their cards? ... This is very bad to hear, but better now, than after a purchase.

not sure what you mean.... the GPU on the Thinkpad other than the W700 is actually soldered to the motherboard, and you can't upgrade them or buy them as such.

I want to buy FX3700 Quadro used in W700. But I'm not going to use it with Lenovo/IBM laptop. And I was wondering is there any locks that producer put, so the card is not compatible to other laptops? Mechanical everything is OK, it can fit without any problem, but I know that some producers do BIOS checks and if the card is placed in different laptop, the card simply don't start.

you mean whitelisting in the BIOS? Which laptop are you going to use it on? HP, Dell and Lenovo laptop all use whitelisting system of some sort...

can't you use something like vidock instead?

Yes, I can. The thing is that I want to mod, not to use already made products. I intended to use it with my laptop (signature). It's using MXM 2.1 Type III slot for video cards. I found a way to provide additional power that is drained from HE tab, because FX 3700 is MXM HE card. The only thing that I have to know is this whitelisting in BIOS applies somehow to video BIOS? Because as I read you can't use a not whitelisted device in your HP/IBM/Lenovo/Compaq. Am I right? This is ridiculous. But does opposite applies?

MXM cards used in the W700 are supplied as-is from nvidia without any specific changes for the W700.   they should work in any mobile workstation that accepts MXM cards as long as the notebook itself accepts that specific card.   if the BIOS in your MSI MS-1722-ID2 will accept the FX 3700 then the card from a W700 will more than likely work.

i suggest contacting MSI to ask if they have any limitations in their BIOS.   if not then you should be ok.

    Thaks to all who replied.
    @ Erik
I'll try to find out what cards does my BIOS support. Because this card is MXM 2.1 Type HE and my laptop is without HE tab. I know that HE tab is used only to supply additional power required from card, so I found a way to give the card all the power that it requires. Also in one other model of MSI's laptops is used 9800M GS, which is also with HE tab, but it is not connected. The card is 512Mb version (uses 60 Watts; 1024Mb version - 75 watts) which make it possible to run on MXM 2.1 Type III slot. So I think that there is a chance this card to work.
