I just had two quick questions. 1. Is it safer for me to get the 2GB RAM on one DIMM, as opposed to the 3GB RAM which would be on 2 DIMMS, with respect to the whole "2 DIMM crashing" problem? I'm inclined to get the 3GB but I doubt I really need that much, so if there's a downside I won't. Also, is there any particular reason I shouldn't downgrade to XP professional? I haven't seen anything to recommend going with vista. I'll have to upgrade at some point, but probably not for a few years. Any advice would be great.

well.. when i ordered mine.. a r61.. with TI8100.. i got the 1GB DIMM and ordered another 2GB DIMM from newegg.. i haven't had any crashing at all.. i dunno if its a T61 problem or what.. so far mine has worked fine..

as for vista or xp pro.. if its in your budget.. get vista business.. and they will give you xp restore cds.. i just went with vista basic and its doing fine so far.. i have winxp and vista ultimate already that i could install but so far no need for anything more then basic.. dont need aero and i dont need any media center stuff..

Is there a way of approaching the RAM issue from a more technical perspective? I'm just wondering if anecdotal information is all there is on the issue. And what specifically is better about vista business as compared to XP professional? The bulk of what i'm reading shows vista to be buggy and a resource hog, whereas XP is stable and fast. I see what you're saying about having the XP back-up discs, but I'd rather not be in the position of having to change operating systems myself, as I think i'm liable to screw something up.
