I initally bought a 4gb kit and vista always showed 3.3gb. So I split it with my brother so we each had 3gb. Now his system has issues so I wanted to test the RAM in mine.

When I got to the 2gb+2gb combination installed, vista (32 bit) actually showed the correct amount. 4gb.

Has Microsoft recently done something to address the issue?

vista 32 shows that you have 4gb installed but it will still only use about 3.3gb. This has gotten so many people confused its frustrating that they even did this. Hope its not too much of a let down for you.

no I thought they finally fixed something as I used to see 3.3gb

turns out sp1 will SHOW 4.0gb but not actually use it (just like you stated)

    thanks

It's not a limitation of Windows or microsoft. It's a limitation of the CPU. It can only address a certain amount of memory unless you install vista x64.

lol, well that does mean it is a limitation of windows. but yes it is dependent on CPU architecture as well.
