From what I gather based on several threads, it seems like this is an issue that is not rare, and I was curious to see how widespread it is, and if it applies to all the 61 series models. But it deserves to be said that this is a VERY minor issue.

I believe it only applies to Vista, so please ONLY respond to the poll IF YOU ARE RUNNING VISTA.

If you are NOT running Vista and have this issue, please respond with "No Brightness Meter (Other)" and include your info.

Once we see trends, maybe we can talk more about the nature of the issue (if it's just the brightness meter, or if it's all the on-screen displays, etc).

Dunno if this will help people that do not have the on-screen brightness display:

On my T61 with Vista, I do have it.

However, it is only after ALL boot programs are loaded does it kick in. Seems to kick in when the Power Scheme actually kicks in. Dunno if this helps to isolate the problem for those who don't have it but want it.

i have reinstalled my OS several times and can never get the brightness OSD to work properly. I have seen it once before so I know it definitely exists.

R61 here. There isn't any OSD for brightness, even the first time I used it (formatted since).

Are you guys all refering to the green bars when you hit Fn and Pagedown/ Pageup?

It was working right out of the box, did a reinstall (clean), installed several Thinkpad utilities and I still have it :D

No brightness display on my T61. Volume & light OSD work though. Never had the brightness display from the first day I bought the notebook.

T61p - worked out the box, and still works fine after clean Vista re-installs. (Ultimate, 32bit)
As noted earlier, it only works once all other vista startup processes have got up and running.

No real problems here, although occasionally sound or volume on-screen display won't work. Restarting seems to solve the problem.

I believer Hyper???? mentioned some time ago the cause of this problem was the integrated graphics. Lenovo seem to know about this but no fix as yet it seems.

I've got integrated, vista and do not have OSD functionality.

I believe you'll have a better chance of OSD working correctly if you've dedicated graphics.

thank you...very interesting...I hope they come up with a fix for this for those of us who have integrated...It's not that big of a pain...but it would be nice to know how many bars of brightness you are running

Yes, I agree. It's not critical. After all, your eyes can tell you when the screen is being dimmed or not. So, you don't really need that OSD thingy!

Its part of the Thinkvantage tool set, which one I'm not exactly sure though. I did notice that after the recent update it did enable it though, so maybe Lenovo forgot to include it before.

set your power management so closing lid does not do anything. then if when this occurs again, just shut and open your lid really quick and it will appear

I have a T61 with integrated and it works.........most of the time
Sometimes it doesn't display, and when it doesn't, it will dim down one more level than when the osd is working. When the osd is working and I fn+end a few times it will go as low as it can then jump up one level..........anyone know what gives?
