My X61 has the following configuration:
Penryn T8300 2.4Ghz
100 GB Hitachi Travelstar 7K200 7200rpm HDD
2GB Ram
2GB SD Readyboost
Intel AGN
BT
It came preinstalled with Vista Home Basic. I ran the Vista Experience Index with only the preinstalled stuff and got a Processor Index of 5.4
I then proceeded to do a clean install with Vista Ultimate following the clean install guide. After all the necessary drivers were installed, I ran the index again and now my Processor Index is 4.4. I repeated it three times with same result. The laptop was plugged in, set to max performance.
Questions:
1. Does anyone have an explanation?
2. Does anyone have any solutions on how to increase the Processory Index?
3. What Processor Index does other owners have with a Penryn T8300 2.4Ghz CPU?

WEI is an absolutely useless piece of crap benchmark. Don't worry about it.

Get it? WEI sucks, a lot. -

i'll third that. WEI results are inconsistent. there is no way to increase your WEI. you could add ram and your ram score may drop, not change, or increase. you could put in a faster processor and your processor score could drop, stay the same, or increase. you could do another clean install of vista. that might drop your score even more. or it might increase it above where you started. there is really no telling. other t8300 owners probably get a wide variety of scores, between 3 and 5.9, depending on the time of day, the cardinal direction the user is facing, the latitude / longitude coordinates the test is being done, and whether or not the user has eaten a healthy breakfast.

I have a T8300 and when I saw my WEI from the factory install of Vista basic was as CPU score of 5.3. Then when I did a clean install of Vista Business (64-bit), the processor score was still 5.3. So, no change for me.

i don't use vista except at work. but vista home basic recommended system requirements are less than all other versions of vista. one major reason i would believe is the inclusion of aero and other pointless aesthetics. thus, it can cause a higher strain on the computer. i wouldn't rely on benchmarks like everyone above has mentioned. keep in mind, it's more difficult to notice a positive change in preformance compared to a negative change.

Put the battery back in if you took it out during wei test.
With batt out wei index will always fall. -
honestly.. its all a marketing scam.. and its working pretty well...

Vista Processor Index dropped after clean install? Odd..
